Get ready for some excitement, Boomers. Between wine and music, it doesn’t get much better than this coming weekend!

First, let’s start with a showdown. How about pinot noir from California versus pinot noir from Oregon? For $50, take your pick of one of two tastings, one at 5:30 and the other at 7:30 p.m. at the Desert Springs Resort, 4855 Country Club Dr. in Palm Desert. Here’s the lineup: the best California pinot noir goes head to head against the finest vintages from the Willamette Valley. Picture this — a Russian River Valley pinot noir with its bright fruit against a Willamette Valley pinot noir that shows great depth with a dusty, fruit character. Or maybe a classy pinot noir from the Anderson Valley of Mendocino. No matter the outcome, you win!

Normally, I try to write about separate events for Saturday and Sunday, but this weekend is an exception. The reason is this is the 15th Annual Idyllwild Jazz in the Pines festival. Two-days running of some of the best jazz heard anywhere on the planet deserves this kind of attention. Saturday kicks off with legendary guitarist Lee Rittenour. Saturday guest performers include: Patrice Rushen, Brian Bromberg, and Will Kennedy. Sunday’s headliner is saxophonist Dave Koz. Some of the musicians performing this weekend are Yve Evans, Harry Pickens, Lori Andrews, Paul Carman & Fourbits, Peter Sprague, Bob Boss, and the Najite Agindotan African Ensemble. As if the music wasn’t enough, there’s food, wine tasting, fine arts and crafts, and a special Saturday night barbecue music jam. Tickets are $60 per person each day and are available by calling 951-313-3361. Lose yourself to the music and gorgeous surroundings of Idyllwild. This is an experience you’ll carry for years.

So, you see, Boomers, once again the Coachella Valley and surrounding have proven that this is Boomer country.

Get ready for another fun and exciting weekend Boomers! This is our desert!

Well, let’s see … shall we start with wine, food, music, or dancing? How about all at once! Remember, Boomers, everything to excess; moderation is for monks!

You can do all this 6-8:30 p.m. Friday at the Rattlesnake Wine Bar at the Classic Club, 75200 Classic Club Blvd. in Rancho Mirage. This festive event features seven different Chambers wines. Rattlesnake’s Chef Jimmy Schmidt is preparing a series of hors d’oeuvres that are especially paired to each wine. Of course, all this is with a backdrop of the incredible vistas and sunset visible from the Classic Club Golf Course. Then, listen to music and dance the night away. It just doesn’t get any better. Hmmm. What to do Saturday? I know! Music, music, music! Saturday is the 31st anniversary of the death of The King — Elvis Presley. There are a couple of event commemorating the date.

Elvis fans are gathering at his Honeymoon Estate in Palm Springs for a Tribute Day. Tours of the estate where Elvis and Pricilla celebrated their honeymoon in 1967 are from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Of course, there will be music and dancing in the evening. Call 322-1192 for ticket information and details.

Another tribute to The King takes place at 8 p.m. at Spotlight 29 Casino, 46200 Harrison Pl. in Coachella, as Paul Casey takes to the stage in Elvis The Musical. Casey, widely considered the best Elvis imitator, takes the audience on a musical journey of The King's career.

Another terrific musical journey takes place 8 p.m. Saturday at Fantasy Springs Casino as Jethro Tull takes the stage at the casino's special events center. This three-man British progressive rock and blues band with the unique flute work of Ian Anderson has been entertaining audiences for 40 years and they're still going strong. At $49 to $109 for tickets, it’s a steal.

Sunday is the day of rest, according to the Good Book. Still, there are some things to do that don’t take a lot of energy. Check out the College of the Desert Street Fair from 7 a.m. to noon on the COD campus, 43500 Monterey Ave. in Palm Desert. There are crafts, refreshments, and all kinds of open-air shopping available for a leisurely Sunday morning with the family. Because it takes place in the morning, it doesn’t get too hot.

So, Boomers, once again we see that the desert is the place for us.

It’s August and it’s time for the 15th Annual Jazz in the Pines, produced by the Associates of Idyllwild Arts Foundation. This is one of the coolest events in the area, literally cool high above the desert in the pine-scented mountain air, and doubly cool to get to hear the top jazz greats in the country in a picturesque outdoor amphitheatre shaded by swaying parachutes.

Held on the campus of Idyllwild Arts for two whole days — August 23 and 24, to benefit scholarships for the Idyllwild Arts Foundatation.

Gates open at 10 a.m. with continuous music from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at various venues in addition to the amphitheatre. The headliner on Saturday is the legendary guitarist Lee Ritenour with hi special guest performers Patrice Rushen, Brian Bromberg, and Will Kennedy. The headliner on Sunday is the great sax man Dave Koz, nominated six times for a Grammy and his lush At the Movies spent eight weeks on the Billboard Top Contemporary Jazz Chart.

Other popular artists appearing both days are Yve Evans, Harry Pickens, Lori Andrews, Paul Carman & Fourbits, Peter Sprague, Bob Boss, and the Najite Agindotan African Ensemble, plus the incomparable Marshall Hawkins, Musical Director of the festival and the many talented students and alumni.

In addition to fabulous music, there is fabulous food, Wine tasting, fine arts and crafts, and a special Saturday Night BBQ Jam for just $20. There are many charming inns throughout the village of Idyllwild. Call the Chamber of Commerce at 951-659-3259 for information.

There are a lot of good things happening for Boomers this weekend.

Let’s start with Friday — a double-header, so to speak.

The first event isn’t entertainment, but is something very worthwhile. The city of Indian Wells, in partnership with the Community Blood Bank, is hosting a blood drive from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Indian Wells City Hall, 44950 Eldorado Dr. The Bloodmobile will be located in the parking lot adjacent to City Hall. Refreshments will be provided and each donor will receive discounted tickets to Knott’s Soak City Waterpark in Palm Springs. Walk-ins are welcome, but if you wish to reserve a time in advance, please call. Please remember to bring a valid ID, eat a good meal, and drink plenty of water before donating.

This is a wonderful way to give back to the community that has given so much to us. No excuses — just do it.

Later that same day, reward yourself by going to Casino Morongo to hear Englebert Humperdinck perform at 9 p.m. This versatile entertainer started in 1966 with his smash hit song, “Please Release Me.” He has released romantic ballads every year since. Ticket prices start at $35.

As for Saturday, there is an event that I especially recommend — Regional Wines With Chef Oliver from Germany at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Desert Springs, 74855 Country Club Dr. in Palm Desert. I confess affection for things German. My mother’s family is from there and I grew up in St. Louis, as German a city as you’ll find this side of Berlin. Executive Chef Oliver Wolf and sommelier Paul Bologna plan a tasting featuring a range of wines including a refreshing Silvaner from Franconia, an earthy Pinot Noir from the Aar River and classic Rieslings from the Rheingau and Mosel River Valleys. Authentic German cheeses will be served with such classic dishes as Gerauchertes Froellenfilet mit Meerrettich and Rinderrouladen mit Rotkohl for a truly memorable regional food and wine pairing experience. All this for $50 per person and you don’t have to fly Lufthansa to get there!

For Sunday, try mixing a bit of business with pleasure. There’s an event called Plush @ the Pool from 1-7 p.m. at the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort Oasis Pool at 44600 Indian Wells Ln. in Indian Wells. This is an opportunity to relax and network with others at the same time. Among the attractions are VIP cabañas, premier shopping garden, poolside spa massages, fashion shows by top designers, networking, lounging, drink specials, food, special raffles, a live DJ, and relaxation. A portion of the proceeds goes to a different local charity every week. This is a great place to see and be seen. For $10, it can’t be beat.

So, you see Boomers, once again the Coachella Valley has a lot in store for our generation.

Idyllwild Makes a Cool Summer Retreat

A quick escape only an hour from the desert cities, the community of Idyllwild exists among alpine forests, mountains, and meadows — and amid first-class offerings of art and music.

Arts in the Pines
A beneficiary of the jazz festival, Idyllwild Arts Summer Program offers lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on classes and workshops for children, teens, and adults through Aug. 16.

Since 1950, the art program has invited artists and visitors to the Idyllwild Arts 205-acre campus in the mountain wilderness. Art, Culture, and Nightlife in Old Town La Quinta

It starts out relaxed and refined 5 p.m. Friday with a celebration of art, culture, and nightlife in Old Town La Quinta. Now, this event is designed to experience the desert summer as it should be experienced. For those of you not familiar with Old Town La Quinta, it’s a district offering shops, restaurants, and art galleries in an Early California setting at 78015 Main St. in La Quinta. Stroll along the street and listen to music, browse the various shops and galleries, and sample some of the food offerings at such places as the Hog’s Breath Inn, Stuft Pizza Bar and Grill, and Old Town Bar and Grill. There’s wine tasting at Old Town Cellar and drawings to win $250 gift certificates valid at participating Old Town shops. This is the perfect way to wind down after a busy week.

Hippiefest

Okay, Boomers. Remember 1968? Boy, I sure do. It was a time of tremendous change in the country. On the downside, that year saw the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, the Chicago riots during the Democratic National Convention, and the mounting casualty lists from Vietnam.

On the upside, it saw a spirit of optimism and celebration among the nation’s youth (I was 20 then — old enough to fight; too young to vote) that was especially demonstrated by the music of the era.

Starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, Hippiefest, the 40th anniversary of the Summer of ’68, kicks off at Special Events Center stage at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Some of the musicians appearing at Hippiefest include bass player Jack Bruce of Cream (“Strange Brew” and “White Room”), Flo and Eddie from The Turtles (“Happy Together”), and Melanie (“Brand New Key” and “Lay Down”).

Tickets price is from $29-$59.

Full-Bodied Reds from Napa Valley

On Sunday, it’s time for a more, * ahem * mature pleasure. Starting at 5:30 p.m. at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert is a tasting of the red wines for which the Napa Valley is famous. Sample cabernets, merlots, and zinfandels for $50 a person.

As you can see, this is a terrific weekend to be a Boomer.

I hope you have all recovered from the Independence Day weekend festivities, because there’s a lot of Boomer events in store for us this coming weekend.

Bourbon ... From Barrel to Bottle

One of America’s many contributions to the world is bourbon whiskey. It got its name from Bourbon County, Ky., where it was first distilled in the 18th century. By definition, it must be made of a mash of at least 51 percent corn, although most contemporary bourbon has at least 70 percent in the grain mix, with the remainder of a mixture of wheat, rye or malted barley. It’';s distilled and aged in charred oak caskets for at least four years and is generally 80 proof in strength.

Morton’s Steakhouse, 74880 Country Club Dr. in Palm Desert, celebrates this American tipple from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday. Guests will hear a whiskey expert expound on the spirit’s virtues, while guests sample a variety of this smoky drink. The cost is $45 per person.

Foghat and Leon Russell

Spotlight 29 Casino, 46200 Harrison Pl. in Coachella, becomes a musical time machine back to the ’60s and ’70s as Foghat and Leon Russel bring their music to the stage 8 p.m. Saturday.

Leon Russell

Russell was originally a session musician, but started recording his own music in 1967. He was also a songwriter with his works, such as “Superstar” being recorded by such artists as Rita Coolidge, The Carpenters, and Luther Vandross.

Foghat

Foghat, a British blues-rock band, formed in 1970. In the course of their long career, they had numerous hits, including “Slow Ride” and “I Just Want to Make Love to You.”

Tickets for the performance are $35.

Plush @ The Pool

A brand-new event kicks off 1-7 p.m. Sunday that sounds like a lot of fun. Plush @ The Pool is a gathering for adults at the Hyatt Grand Champions Resort & Spa, 44600 Indian Wells Ln. in Indian Wells. Participants will enjoy cool sounds from DJ XZILE, poolside drink specials and dining, climate-controlled boutique, vendor shopping garden, fashion show, and more. Ticket price is $15 for women and $25 for men.

So, once again, the desert is proving to be an exciting oasis for its mature residents who remember what it was like back in the ’60s and’70s.

Even as a kid, I loved the Independence Day celebrations and my enthusiasm hasn’t waned in the least through the decades. So, I’m going to have a lot of fun this weekend

Starting Friday in Palm Springs, the holiday kicks off with America’s favorite pastime — baseball — as the Power baseball club takes on the Air Force at Palm Springs Stadium, 1901 E. Baristo Rd., at 6:05 p.m. After the game, there will be fireworks.

For East Valley Boomers, Indio is planning an old-fashion patriotic celebration at the Riverside County Fairgrounds, 83503 Hwy. 111, with food, music, and of course, fireworks!

Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage jointly celebrate with a 7:15 p.m. music concert followed by a 9 p.m. fireworks display at Civic Park, 73510 Fred Waring Dr.

Desert Hot Springs’ Fourth of July event takes place at 66750 Park Ln. Lots of family fun to be had there.

As Americans, we are truly blessed. We have a lot to celebrate, so come on out!

There’s even more happening this weekend that’s not directly related to the Independence Day celebrations.

Palm Canyon Theatre, 538 N. Palm Canyon Dr., presents a musical version of Reefer Madness with 8 p.m. showings both Sat. and Sun. Remember Reefer Madness? It came out as an educational film in 1934 warning of the dangers of the “Devil Weed” — marijuana. I remember seeing the film in college at a film festival. The air was hazy with the moviegoers’ smoke. I still remember one young male character in the movie, hopelessly addicted, yelling “Somebody give me a reefer!” The entire theater shouted the words in unison. Reefer Madness is fun, entertaining, and, well, what we used to call a “goof” back in the ’60s.

As we age, our tastes (supposedly) mature as well. If Reefer Madness is not sophisticated enough, there are some wonderful opportunities Sunday at the Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 Museum Dr. The entire community is invited to the 101st birthday of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. This event kicks off the museum’s summer exhibition of the woman painter. It consists of about 50 photographs of Kahlo taken by celebrity photographer Nickolas Muray. Enjoy the art, listen to music, and even eat some birthday cake!

All in all, this Fourth of July weekend promises to be a great time for Baby Boomers.

We’re coming up to another fun-filled weekend just chockfull of great things to do for us more *ahem* mature members of the desert community. We Boomers blazed the trail for a lot trends. Many of those trends were pretty bad — remember Nehru shirts and disco? — but some were outstanding. One of the most lasting contributions our generation made was music.

Many of the songs and groups have lasted well beyond their critics. I recall my father, who firmly believed that good music died with Glenn Miller, telling me that no one would be listening to my music in a decade or so.

Well, tell that to the Oak Ridge Boys who are making an appearance at 8 p.m. this Friday at Spotlight 29 Casino, 46200 Harrison Pl., in Coachella.

This musical group formed as a gospel band back in 1958 and they’re still going strong. The evolved their sound through the years, although they never really abandoned their gospel roots. Still, they managed a number of hits in their 50-year run. “Elvira,” “Gonna Take A Lot Of River,” and “American Made” appealed to a wide audience. The Oak Ridge Boys are truly a generation-spanning group. Tickets range in price from $30 to $50.

Another trend we Boomers helped along was organic food. I once kept an organic garden that gradually grew through the years from a modest 200 square feet to more than 1,500 square feet. I grew so much fresh produce that I was even able to sell some of it to local restaurants.

If you have a taste for fresh, organically grown vegetables, this Saturday is an important day for you — it’s the last of the Certified Farmers’ Market events for the next three months. It opens at 8 a.m. and runs until 12:30 p.m. at the north end of Camelot Theatres, 2300 Baristo Rd. in Palm Springs. There are some terrific items there, from specialty vegetables and fruits, to flowers, to cheese and bread. Also, it’s quite the gathering place for locals and snowbirds to see and be seen. I suggest you arrive early, avoid the heat and crowds, and take you pick of the fresh produce. It’s a real treat.

Another trend we Boomers advanced (or at least continued from previous generations) was the appreciation of a good quaff. As we have aged through the years, our tastes have often matured from keg parties to wine tasting.

At 5 p.m. this Sunday, Chef Gino offers some regional wines at JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa, 74855 Country Club Dr. in Palm Desert. Discover some of the most exciting wines made today in Sicily with this exotic lineup of luxury offerings. For $50, sample three specialty appetizers, served by Sicilian chef, Gino Cipriano of Ristorante Tuscany, and six wines will be poured by award-winning sommelier Paul Bologna in this special tasting. Reservations are required.

So, once again, this weekend proves that this is Boomers’ Paradise.

Daddy and Poppie Get Married!

Three-year-old Roxy watched as her parents, James Tracy Hermann and Matthew McNamara exchanged wedding vows yesterday, the first day same-sex marriage ceremonies were performed in the Coachella Valley.

I witnessed it too and was honored to be a part of my co-worker and friend's special day. And though the ceremony was simple, you could feel the magnitude of this historical and poignant moment.

Once their number was called at the Indio courthouse the pair proceeded into a small room complete with a white trellis adorned with pink flowers and green leaves.

They took their spots, and even though I've never seen two men married, it wasn't at all a surreal moment. I'm a believer that when two people, regardless of gender or race, are right for one another, like Tracy and Matt, it's just a natural fit.

I did, however, hold my breath as the ceremony was coming to an end, I've heard it a dozen times, you are now pronounced.....wait, what's she going to say....and then it came out, united in marriage, — and sealed with a kiss.

And for Matt and Tracy, this was just the legalization of something that's been in their hearts since their commitment ceremony in 2004. However, they wanted to make it legal and experience the same rights and privileges as other married couples.

Growing up in a family of ten children, to Irish-Catholic parents married for 54 years, Matt had the same aspirations as his other siblings — a home, a spouse, and children.
Now the pieces of the puzzle are “officially” complete.

And as for their daughter Roxy, she doesn't see the difference. In her mind "poppie" and "daddy" have always been married.

Ready, Willing and ABLE!

Nearly 100 marriage licenses were granted yesterday and 40 marriage ceremonies performed at the Indio courthouse.

All went well, no protesters showed and for the first time in California sames-sex couples that have been in love for years were able to marry.

One couple we met, Jeff Young (left) and John Bright, traveled from Ohio, to officially wed.

It's Time to Party — Desert Residents Rejoice in Right to Marry

Same-sex couples can legally marry in California, the second state, after Massachusetts, to allow this right.

Gay and lesbian partners across the state, and here in the Palm Springs area, are celebrating their commitments and making them "official."

Join in the festivities as California makes history by granting same-sex couples this long-awaited freedom to marry.

Go Pink at the Parker

On Friday, June 20, the Parker Palm Springs hotel presents "A Pink Celebration of Marriage," along with partner Let California Ring, a campaign that has remained steadfast in its support of gay and lesbian marriage, as well as educating the public about the respect, support, protections, and responsibilities, that come with the union.

Guests will be escorted down the pink promenade, to the Pink Palace as the Parker decks out their hotel grounds for this special event. Couples are invited to celebrate their unions or propose to their partner in the lavish surroundings.

There will be dancing, food, and entertainment by DJ Luc Bench.

Come one, come all — this is the time for couples and singles, gay or straight, to celebrate marriage.

Dance in the Streets

The party continues in Palm Springs on Sat., June 21 as Mayor Steve Pougnet and members of the city council will perform weddings in downtown Palm Springs.

There will be wedding cakes, a cash bar, entertainment by comedian Shann Carr and DJ Corey White, and an appearance by activist Christine Chavez and other surprise guests — but most importantly DANCING IN THE STREETS.

I find that as I age, I still have the body of a Greek god — unfortunately, it’s that of Dionysius.

Put in more pedestrian terms — I love to eat and drink.

Well, this weekend is the weekend for Boomers to give in to their inner Greek gods. There’s enough going on to satisfy even the appetite of those ancient deities.

First, Friday is the last day of the Palm Spring Restaurant Week. This is a delightful celebration of the many exotic cuisines found here in the desert. More than 40 different restaurants offered three-course prix fixe menus ranging from $26-$36 per person. And this food is truly world-class dining. It is an experience that creates memories. Saturday is has a nice wine event. How about sampling some full-bodied reds from Napa Valley? For $50, JW Marriot Desert Springs Resort & Spa is offering a plate of some of the best cabernets, merlots and zinfandels of the region.

I admit to an ethnic preference in my wine. My mother’s family came from Germany and I picked up a fondness for Rhineland wines from her. As luck would have it, JW Marriot Desert Springs Resort & Spa’s Executive Chef Oliver Wolf just happens to be from Germany. Sunday, the chef will not only present wines from the Rhine and Mosel valleys, but will also pair these offerings with German regional dishes. For those who have not been exposed to German cuisine, I can’t recommend it highly enough. In America, we speak of French chefs; in Europe, they speak of German chefs. Sample this fare, and you’ll know why.

Sit, Stay, Relax — It's a Dog Lovin' Desert

As the owner of a spit-fire chihuahua-mix, I'm glad I live in Palm Springs, where there are so many dog friendly stores, shops and apartments.

For visitors, we even have hotels that welcome your best friend. A few of those include the Parker Palm Springs, The Hilton Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Riviera Resort.

But who likes to be cooped up all the time. We don't, so why would our beloved furry friends? Guide Dogs of the Desert has the perfect solution — Yappy Hour, 6-8 Thur. June 12 at the Parker Palm Springs, 1800 E. Palm Canyon Dr.

The casual, no-guilt affair (no worries about leaving the pup home alone) lets owners and their pets frolic on the grassy knoll adjacent to Norma's Restaurant. There will be hors d'oeuvres, wine, sodas, and a speciality cocktail called "The K9."

The cost is $35 and will benefit Guide Dogs of the Desert, a school that provides mobility, companionship and independence to the blind through the use of a guide dog. The recently opened Guide Dog Depot, 125 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way, offers an education center and retail items for all dog lovers.

Another weekend approaches and it's time for fun. Especially Boomer dads because Sunday is Father's Day.

There are some good wine happenings this weekend. One such event is the Summer Wine Bar Festival at Rattlesnake from 5-8 p.m. Friday, located at 75200 Classic Club Blvd. in Palm Desert. For $50, you can score cheese, artisan breads, honeyed nuts and two small plates matched to two-ounce tasters of eight wines, along with a sweet treat. The wines are from the Henry Wine Group and Ray Crouteau. Not too shabby!

Saturday is for Boomer music! None other than Eric Burdon & The Animals take to the stage at 8 p.m. at Spotlight 29 Casino, 46200 Harrison Pl. in Coachella. Personally, I always believed this group superior to the Beatles. Eric and has bandmates successfully fused rock and blues into a distinctive sound. “We’ve Got To Get Out of This Place” became an unofficial anthem for the troops in Vietnam. Of course, there was their breakout “House of the Rising Sun,” and what I always believed was the number that highlighted Burdon's blues genius, “As The Years Go Passing By” from the Love Is album. If Burdon ever gave a bad performance, I never heard of it.

Sunday is Father's Day. Boomers, if your fortunate enough that your father is still living, celebrate him. My late father was one of “The Greatest Generation” who won World War II. Perhaps because of the poor rations he received in the South Pacific or because he came out of the Great Depression, Dad loved food. He would have loved the Palm Springs Restaurant Week, which starts Sunday. More than 40 Palm Springs restaurants offering three-course, prix fixe menus for $26-$36 a person. There are simply too many restaurants to list here, but believe me when I say they are among the finest dining experiences the desert offers.

As you can see, there’s a lot going on for Boomers this weekend, so enjoy.

Welcome, Boomers! There’s some really fun happenings this weekend. Let's kick this off with music.

Can you say Charlie Daniels?

YES! I first heard him back in my misspent youth when he played “Uneasy Rider.” I really identified with the saga of the long-haired hippy whose car breaks down in Mississippi. I used to live in Alabama. I even had long hair ... back when I HAD hair. Of course, my hair and outlook on life have changed a bit since then, as has Charlie’s. His patriotic numbers, especially since 9/11 make me stand proud. Then, of course, there’s his signature “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” There's darn few folk can saw a fiddle like Charlie! He’s onstage this Friday at 8 p.m. at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio along with .38 Special as part of the Volunteer Jam.

One of the things I loved as a child was going to a fish fry. This pastime is somewhat rare here, this being a desert an all. But rare or not, there’s one happening Saturday at Ruth Hardy Park, 804 E. Tamarisk Rd., in Palm Springs. What makes it better is that it’s also a fundraiser for some personal heroes of mine — firefighters. For $10, feast on fish, corn on the cob, watermelon and other delights while benefiting the Palm Springs Firemen’s Association. It runs from 6-11 p.m.

For those of us aging Boomers with more refined tastes, the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa at 74855 Country Club Dr. in Palm Desert is having a wine tasting Sunday at 5:30 p.m. featuring the red wines of northern Italy and Tuscany. For 50 bucks, wine lovers will discover some new favorites. Reservations are advised. Call 341-1772 to make one.

So, as you see, there’s a lot going on this weekend of special interest to Boomers. As we used to say, “It’s a Happening!”

The EighthAnnual Palm Springs Film Noir Festival opens tonight with The Killers, starring Lee Marvin, Angie Dickinson, John Casavetes, Clu Gallagher, and Ronald Reagan. The beautiful Miss Dickinson will be on hand to discuss making this film with this roster of great actors. Based on a Hemingway short story, this neo-noir film is a classic. The schedule of 14 films and special guests is awesome and fans of this genre will be thrilled by the selection assembled by Founder Arthur Lyons, his wife Barbara, and his dedicated associates. Arthur's untimely death is a blow to his many fans and noir lovers but this festival will be upbeat just as he would want it.

The 1965 psychological thriller Bunny Lake is Missing,
starring Carol Lynley will be screened on Saturday,
May 31st at 7:30 p.m. Miss Lynley will
make a guest appearance at the screening.

Miss California 2006 and recital and opera singer Jacquelynne Fontaine was spotted lunching at the new trendy eatery Pom at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino while in the Coachella Valley to sing for the troops.

In town from May 23-25, Fontaine performed during the 5th Annual "A Salute fo the Troops" benefit in Coachella.
