It doesn’t take long to figure out how three-time Masters Champion Nick Faldo influenced the design of the 6,923-yard course at Marriott’s Shadow Ridge Golf Club. Absent the heat of day and clear blue skies, you’d swear you were in Australia. Alongside course architect Brian Curley, Faldo designed a course that is all about wide fairways (perhaps the widest in the desert on a competitive course) buttressed by dangerous bunkers (quickly becoming a Faldo-course hallmark and perfected here to perilous heights), undulating greens, and tricky approach shots.
Design work has become a second career for Faldo. “It’s been a genuine passion of mine for many years,” he says, noting that while Shadow Ridge was his first American design, he’s now designing projects in 12 countries, though it’s clear from this par 71 that he’s just as threatening on the business end of things as he was on the course.
